Every Name Is A Life

The Divine Spark

In the Jewish tradition, the name of God holds immense significance. It is considered so holy that we do not speak it aloud but replace it with substitutes like Adonai or HaShem (literally "The Name"). This practice underscores Judaism's profound reverence for the divine.

In Jewish tradition, each of our names similarly holds profound significance. The Hebrew terms for different aspects of the soul—nefesh (life force), neshama (soul), and ruach (spirit)—highlight this connection. Notably, neshama (soul) is closely related to neshima (breath), suggesting that our names are "breathed" into us, carrying the essence of who we are. This echoes the creation story, where God breathes life into Adam, symbolizing the divine link between breath, soul, and identity.

We can understand the relationship between HaShem and our own names in several ways:

  • A Divine Spark: Each person, created in God's image, carries a divine spark. Our names, like HaShem, represent our unique essence.
  • A Sacred Responsibility: Just as we treat God's name with reverence, we have a responsibility to honor the names and memories of others.
  • Individuality and Unity: While HaShem represents the unity of God, our individual names represent our unique identities within the broader human family.
  • The Power of Naming: In Jewish tradition, naming is a profound act. God names creation into being, and parents name their children, imbuing them with hopes and blessings.
  • An Eternal Memory: Just as HaShem is eternal, our names carry our memory forward, even after we're gone.

How This Relates to Mekimi

In the context of the Mekimi, this understanding deepens our approach to:

  • Honoring Individual Lives: By remembering and speaking the names of those lost on October 7th, we affirm each of their worth and eternal significance.
  • Raising Up Names: The act of "raising up" (Mekimi) includes elevating the names and memories of the victims, treating each name with the reverence we accord to HaShem.
  • Community in Naming: When we come together to speak the names of those lost, we create a sacred community, echoing the way HaShem unites all of creation.
  • Breath of Life: Speaking the victims' names breathes life into their memory, carrying their essence and impact forward.
  • Tikkun Olam: By remembering names and stories, we engage in the act of "repairing the world," countering the attempt to erase these precious lives.
  • From Universal to Individual: HaShem represents the universal divine presence, encompassing all, while each of us is given a unique name that reflects our individuality. In the same way, our commemoration honors both the sacredness of each life and the universal dignity of all humanity.

When we speak the names of those lost at a Mekimi commemoration, we engage in a deeply sacred act. We raise up not just memories but the very essence of each person, affirming their connection to the divine and all of humanity. This act becomes a form of prayer, a way of connecting the earthly and the divine, and a powerful statement that each life—each name—is of infinite value.
